Ghana’s parliament confirmed late Tuesday that one of its lawmakers had been arrested by authorities in the Netherlands for undisclosed reasons.
In a statement, Parliament said Kwame Ohene Frimpong, Member of Parliament (MP) for Asante Akyem North in the Ashanti Region, was arrested by Dutch authorities at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
“The Rt. Honourable Speaker and the leadership of Parliament are in touch with Ghana’s mission in The Hague for detailed information on the matter. The public will be duly informed appropriately on this matter,” the statement pledged.
Sources familiar with the matter have said the MP is being detained in connection with suspected financial crimes, including money laundering and suspected romance scams, involving an estimated amount of 32 million U.S. dollars.
