Ghana says to commence onshore Voltaian Basin oil drilling in 2026

Ghana is set to commence oil drilling activities in the onshore Voltaian Basin before the end of 2026, President John Dramani Mahama disclosed late Thursday.

Mahama said during the groundbreaking ceremony for the second phase of Sentuo Oil Refinery in Tema, Ghana’s eastern port city, that the drilling to be led by Explorco, the exploration subsidiary of state-owned Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) would determine the commerciality of petroleum reserves in the basin.

The Voltaian Basin, according to the president, has been identified as a region with significant petroleum potential, and the planned drilling programme seeking to diversify Ghana’s hydrocarbon resource base beyond existing offshore fields.

Ghana produces crude from the offshore Jubilee and TEN fields, while the Sankofa OCTP field is a major gas-producing field with accompanying crude in lower volumes.
