Mobile money transactions in Ghana between January and August of 2026 stood at 3.3 trillion Ghana cedis (280.6 billion U.S. dollars), according to data available recently.
The volume of transactions in August 2026 alone stood at 1.05 billion cedis, the first such volume for a single month, said Shaibu Haruna, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MobileMoney (MoMo) FinTech Limited (MMFL), during a recent media interaction.
According to Haruna, Ghana had at least 85.8 million registered mobile money accounts as of the end of August, with 26.4 million active accounts, which are accounts that performed at least one transaction over the previous 90 days.
In terms of funds kept in mobile money wallets, the CEO said the float has increased to 39.8 billion cedis, up from 28.4 billion cedis a year earlier.
Moreover, Haruna disclosed that the total transactions processed by MMFL in a day are well over 26 million, making the company Ghana’s national transaction rail and placing an enormous responsibility on it to preserve reliability, security, and scale.
Due to the swelling traffic, he said the company carried out a significant upgrade of its technology in 2025 that nearly doubled its transaction-processing capacity.
Haruna said MMFL would continue to undertake constant upgrades, particularly in system resilience and cybersecurity, to ensure reliability and protect customers.
“We are a national transaction rail, and public confidence depends on uninterrupted service and protection of customer funds,” he highlighted.
