The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has announced the completion of the right-of-way clearance work for the construction of the proposed expressway linking Accra, Ghana’s capital, with Kumasi, the second city.
In a post on its X page showing earthmoving machines at work, the GAF said it had cleared 175.6 km kilometers to make way for the proposed expressway, which is planned to cut down travel time between the two major cities in the country.
“The finish line is in sight. The elite Ghana Armed Forces Engineers have pushed through with absolute grit,” the GAF said in the post.
The post described the process as “an incredible journey of military discipline, precision, and unwavering service to the nation.”
The GAF was tasked at the beginning of the year to clear the path ahead of the award of contract for construction works to begin on the proposed expressway.
The proposed expressway is one of President John Dramani Mahama’s flagship transportation infrastructure projects, expected to boost connectivity between Accra and Kumasi, reduce travel time, ease congestion and facilitate the movement of people and goods.
Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Baah Forson announced in the Mid-Year Budget Review in July that the government had deposited 1.7 billion U.S dollars at the Bank of Ghana to finance the Accra-Kumasi Expressway under the Big Push Infrastructure Program.
