Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday broke ground for the construction of a multi-tiered facility at the Accra International Airport.
The facility includes a seven-story multi-purpose car park for at least 2,030 parking bays; an airport hotel complex; a business complex, including a hospital; an entertainment facility; a sky lounge; and a sky observatory, with a pedestrian connector linking the complex to Terminal 3 of the airport.
Mahama said during the groundbreaking ceremony that the project is part of the government’s efforts to expand the capacity of the airport and position Ghana as the preferred destination, a convenient transit point, and a competitive aviation hub on the continent.
When completed, he said the facility would help ease congestion, improve traffic circulation, and ensure convenient movement of passengers around the airport.
According to the president, the project and other ongoing investments in the aviation sector were being financed entirely through the balance sheets of the Ghana Airport Company Limited and the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, with no direct funding from the state coffers.
He reiterated the government’s resolve to strengthen Ghana’s aviation infrastructure and connectivity, urging workers to exhibit professionalism, courtesy, and discipline in their work.
The president also urged the project managers, contractors, and their consultants to prioritize quality and safety, and address any challenges that could affect the quality, safety, and timely delivery of the project.
“Let’s also give airport users clear advance notice concerning diversions and other construction-related disruptions. Good communication with the public will help maintain confidence and minimize inconvenience to our passengers,” Mahama urged.
