MTN Ghana CEO dismisses data theft assumptions

Stephen Blewett, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTN Ghana, on Friday, dismissed assumptions that the company or its workers had been stealing data and airtime from customers.

Blewett said during the company’s interaction with the media that the telecommunications company has no incentive to engage in such practices.

“Any attempt to manipulate customer data would ultimately drive users away and damage the company’s credibility. Such practices are against our values. We are very responsible,” he stressed.

According to him, customers often consume the data without knowing, particularly through mobile applications that consume data in the background.

There have been widespread complaints by customers of data disappearing from their wallets when they had not even switched on their data.

However, Blewett stated that background activities from mobile applications, automatic updates, and the increasing demand for high-quality video streaming are significant factors that deplete the data purchased by consumers.

The CEO urged customers to take a more proactive role in managing their data by monitoring app activity and adjusting settings such as video quality to better control usage.
