Newmont supports road rehabilitation in Ghana

World-leading gold mining company Newmont Corporation has said in a press release that it would partner with the government of Ghana through the Ministry of Roads and Highways to rehabilitate a major highway in the Bono and Ahafo Regions.

The release said the mining company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Roads and Highways to rehabilitate the 46 km Sunyani-Ntotronso-Akyerensua highway, adding that the contractor has also begun mobilization to commence rehabilitation works.

“Newmont recognizes the important role that road infrastructure plays in facilitating the transportation of goods and services, as well as stimulating local economic growth,” the release stated.

By supporting the government’s effort at improving infrastructure nationwide, the company said it is living its purpose of creating value and improving lives through sustainable and responsible mining.

Newmont has been particularly focused on infrastructure development over the years, in addition to its health, education, and other development-focused investments, said the release.

It added that the company has funded and committed to the rehabilitation of major roads in the Ahafo area, including the Ntotroso-Kenyasi road, the Hwediem-Kenyasi road, and internal roads within the Ntotroso, Wamahinso, Gyedu, Kenyasi No.1, and Kenyasi No.2 communities.

In 2024, the mining firm paid a total of 9.4 billion Ghanaian cedis in taxes to the Ghanaian government, with the Ahafo mine alone contributing 7.3 billion cedis.

Newmont operates in Africa, Australia, Latin America & the Caribbean, North America, and Papua New Guinea.
