Ghana issues flood alert ahead of Burkina Faso’s Baré Dam spillage

The Water Resources Commission (WRC) of Ghana in a release has issued an alert to Ghanaians along the White Volta to prepare for the spillage of Burkina Faso’s Bagré Dam this Monday.

In a release, WRC said Société Nationale d’électricité du Burkina Faso (SONABEL), Burkina Faso’s power producing company, has changed the earlier announced date of Wednesday, 27th August, 2027 to Monday, 25th August due to unforeseen developments.

“A change in the schedule is due to the sudden rise of water levels in the Bagré Dam to the maximum capacity of 90.24 percent, with the water level at 234.27 meters as of Saturday, 23rd August, 2025,” the release stated.

WRC added, “Communities along the White Volta and adjoining areas are advised to take the necessary precautions and adhere to safety guidelines from the local assemblies and the appropriate agencies.”

The most recent severe flooding in Northern Ghana due to the spillage of the Bagré Dam happened in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2023.
