Ghana sure to clear energy sector debts by early 2026

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed the NDC administration commitment to resolving the energy sector’s mounting debt crisis.

Addressing the Africa CEO Summit in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, Mahama promised that substantial payments would be made by the end of 2025 or early 2026, bringing relief to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and other service providers.

The Ghanaian presidents expressed serious concern over the sector’s staggering GH¢80 billion debt, attributing it to previous administrations.

He assured that his government is proactively engaging stakeholders and implementing strategies to clear arrears, ensuring sustained energy production and preventing disruptions.

“We inherited a severely indebted energy sector, with nearly GH¢2.5 billion owed to IPPs, gas suppliers, and other stakeholders,” Mahama stated. “We’ve been working to renegotiate the debt and implement effective management strategies. By year’s end or early next year, we aim to make significant progress in addressing this debt.”

Mahama’s pledge underscores the government’s priority to stabilize the energy sector, promote economic growth, and provide reliable services to Ghanaians.
