Ghana’s gold output surged 8.3 percent in 2023, according to latest data from the Chamber of Mines, driven by small-scale production.
The mining chamber announced at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Friday that the country’s production increased to 4.0 million ounces in 2023 compared with 3.7 million ounces a year earlier.
This latest increase was driven by small-scale gold mining, which increased 70.6 percent to one million ounces in 2023 from 0.66 million ounces the previous year, Michael Akafia, President of the Chamber of Mines, said during the AGM.
“Large-scale gold mining, however, declined from 3.1 million ounces in 2022 to 2.9 million ounces in 2023,” Akafia added.
With this production, Ghana retained its spot as Africa’s largest producer of the yellow metal, and 11th on the global stage.
