Ghanaian task force overawes illegal miners

On Wednesday the task force of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) collaboration with the Western Regional Security Council, Western Naval Command, and the Nzema East Blue Water Guards conducted simultaneous anti-Galamsey operations along and directly on the Ankobra River.

The operation was carried out between Dwira Ashem through Dominase to Akango at the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region.

“During the operations, the NAIMOS Task Force and the Blue Water Guards patrolled and raided structures erected along the banks of the river, while the Western Regional Security operatives with the Western Naval Command personnel cleared illegal mining activities directed on the Ankobra River,” Government Communications Minister Felix Ofosu Kwakye said in a post on his social media page.

According to him, the NAIMOS Task Force has been intermittently sponsoring and leading these joint raids with the said troops over the past three (3) weeks to remove all forms of galamsey activities on or along the river and its banks.

He added that the well-coordinated and simultaneously conducted operations resulted in the seizure of some illegal mining wares and equipment as well as the demolition of several makeshift structures.

Ofosu-Kwakye said 20 makeshift structures were burnt, while 10 dredging platforms and 20 chanfangs were also destroyed. Moreover, he said four motorbikes, 15 pumping machines, two solar panels, one standing fan, one TV set, and three gas cylinders were also seized.
