Huawei-sponsored digital talent development program launched in Kenya

Chinese technology giant Huawei, in collaboration with Kenya’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Authority, launched the ninth cohort of the Presidential DigiTalent Program (PDTP) on Thursday, with the aim of providing local youth with hands-on digital skills.

The training and mentorship program, which runs until July 18, is designed to equip fresh graduates with advanced ICT skills and industry exposure to boost their employability.

More than 400 interns will undergo intensive, hands-on technical training delivered through two specialized tracks: a network and cybersecurity path, and a cloud and artificial intelligence path, designed to prepare participants for emerging technologies.

Michael Kamau, manager of Huawei ICT Academy, said the PDTP has been pivotal in empowering future technology leaders. The program has trained over 3,000 interns, with more than 2,000 securing employment.

“Empowering the next generation of ICT leaders starts with world-class training and globally recognized certifications,” Kamau said in a statement issued in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital.

Zilpher Owiti, acting chief executive officer of the ICT Authority of Kenya, said interns who have completed the PDTP are currently driving the government’s digitization agenda.

“These young professionals are not just jobseekers; they are the innovators powering Kenya’s digital future,” Owiti said, adding that collaboration with Huawei has equipped Kenyan youth with skills to help meet the demands of an evolving ICT sector.

Adam Lane, director of policy and partnerships at Huawei Kenya, noted that besides providing technical skills to young interns, the PDTP helps foster adaptability, resilience, a growth mindset, and leadership.
