The first Deputy Governor of Bank of Ghana Maxwell Opoku-Afari (Ph.D) has taken an early bow from the bank, a statement said late Tuesday.
President John Dramani Mahama has approved of the request by Opoku-Afari to proceed on his terminal leave despite the six months left for the expiry of his contract, said the central bank in a statement.
He was appointed to the position of first deputy governor on 7th August 2017 for a four-year term which was renewed four years later.
“The Bank of Ghana thanks Dr Opoku-Afari for his service to the Bank and the Republic and wishes him well in his future endeavours,” the statement said.
This Monday, the newly appointed Central Bank Governor Johnson Asiama assumed duty after outgoing governor Ernest Addison similarly took an early bow from the central bank.
The central bank has been a critical part of the government’s economic reforms backed by a three-year extended credit facility of 3. Billion U.S. dollars from the international Monetary Fund.
In recent years, the Bank has come under public scrutiny after announcing a loss of 60.8 billion Ghana cedis in 2022 with a negative equity of 55 billion cedis.
However, in what may be a significantly better performance, the central bank recorded a loss of approximately 10.5 billion cedis in 2023.
